Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked access to Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok over concerns about its ability to create sexually explicit deepfakes. Grok, available on Musk’s X platform, enables users to generate images, but it has recently been misused to manipulate photos of real people, especially women and children.

Elon Musk AI Chatbot Grok Faces International Backlash

Both Malaysia and Indonesia announced the decision to block Grok after the tool was used to produce non-consensual and pornographic images. These countries are the first to take action against the tool. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission found that Grok was repeatedly misused and issued a notice to X earlier this year. The commission said X failed to address the risks associated with the platform’s design and primarily focused on the reporting process for users.

Malaysia and Indonesia Crack Down on Grok

The Malaysian authorities announced that Grok would remain blocked until X implements effective safeguards. Indonesia’s Minister of Communications, Meutya Hafid, also condemned the tool for violating human rights and safety, calling its misuse “disgraceful.” Indonesia has already banned platforms like OnlyFans and Pornhub for similar issues.

Public Outcry Over Non-Consensual Image Editing

Many users, including Kirana Ayuningtyas, an Indonesian wheelchair user, have expressed frustration over the manipulation of their images. Ayuningtyas discovered that a stranger had used Grok to edit her photo and depict her in a bikini. Despite adjusting her privacy settings and reporting the incident, Ayuningtyas faced further embarrassment as the image spread.

She described how the process of reporting led to even more people seeing the altered image, causing her emotional distress. “It’s embarrassing, and it feels like a violation,” she said.

International Pressure Mounts on Grok

The controversy over Grok has sparked worldwide condemnation. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the deepfake content “disgraceful,” and UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall expressed her support for blocking X in the UK if it fails to comply with the country’s online safety laws.

Kendall emphasized that the UK’s Online Safety Act empowers regulators to block services that do not adhere to safety standards. If Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, decides to take action, she promised full government support.

The Future of Grok and AI Tool Regulation

As more countries scrutinize AI tools like Grok, concerns over non-consensual deepfakes are likely to grow. Malaysia and Indonesia’s bold move highlights the global challenge of regulating AI-generated content and ensuring it remains safe for users.
